Weather dampens greens’ spirits

GUERNSEY under-18s fell foul of the weather when, after defeating Devon in the South and West Counties Championship on Saturday, their game with Dorset yesterday was called off due to rain. The Paul Ockleford-coached team had turned in a spectacular second-half performance to beat Devon 2-0 in Newton Abbot. It was their first win in the competition.

Upbeat and ready to go for their 1.30pm match with Dorset at Hamworthy, an overnight downpour that did not relent saw it called off mid-morning.

‘It’s disappointing really as we were coming off the back of a win yesterday,’ said Ockleford just after finding out that the match had been cancelled.

‘I was looking forward to seeing how the boys coped from the win in the second game. They were all disappointed when they were told that the game was off.

‘They were up for it and I think if we had lost yesterday, they would have just accepted it.’

Guernsey’s victory over Devon came on the back of second-half goals from Matt Loaring and Robbie Titterington.

But it was a different story for the first half as the home side ran the show but could not find the back of the net.

It is not clear if the Dorset game could be rearranged.

‘It’s a shame that match has been called off on the back of a winning performance because we were looking to carry on and take the momentum into another game,’ said assistant coach Chris du Feu.

‘Instead we’re going to have to go home and drop into Youth One football before coming back over.

‘Realistically we really wanted to play again but it was fairly obvious because of the weather in the last 24 hours that the game wasn’t going to go ahead.’
