Nash ‘Tango’d’ in title showdown
Saturday 31st March 2007, 12:00AM BST.
SAVILLS Tangos have won another men’s league title – but for some of their players it might be the last. Tangos captain Rod Elmy said a number of Tangos’ squad members, including him, his brother Neil and Mike Amstad were considering retirement.
‘There may be a couple of retirements. It’s only really running through our minds at the moment but it is a possibility.
‘Four or five of Tangos are going to Rhodes for the Island Games so we will only get between six and eight weeks off this summer.
‘It starts to take its toll after a while. I’ve been playing for 25 or 26 years.
‘I’ll make a decision during the summer when I’m on the beach having a relaxing time. I’ll try to decide if I can go through it all again.’
If the retirements did go ahead, Elmy believes the Tangos and Blues would have to merge.
‘It wouldn’t really be good for the league but there comes a stage when injuries take their toll during a season.’
Tangos retained their OSA Recruitment League title with a straight sets win over rivals NashCopy.
The win was comparatively easy for the champions as NashCopy did not seem quite right and the title was secured in under an hour.
With setter Darren Lynch still injured NashCopy were forced to use Brian Martel and Matt Buckley as their setters.
This meant that their usual fast attack through the middle was lacking and with poor digs, they really had only an outside ball to use.
Tangos used this to their advantage and set their defence accordingly.
Dave Chapman, who was playing up from the Blues, inflicted some damage at the service line and that combined with a valiant team effort, gave the Tangos a deserved victory and the title.
‘It’s nice to win the league again and hopefully we will go and perform well in the Upton, which we lost last year,’ said Elmy, who praised the strength of the Tangos squad throughout the season.
‘We have two teams and when we came across injuries we were able to bring in players from our second team, which was to our advantage over NashCopy, who don’t really have the cover.
‘It’s been a really good squad effort this season.’
In the other top division clash Orchard PR were on the end of another defeat by Savills Blues, but in their penultimate league it is clear that they have come a long way since the start of the season.
Both title-chasing women’s league teams enjoyed wins over the Alternative Solutions teams last week.
Savills beat ASL 2 in three straight sets, and like NashCopy, who won in three sets against ASL 1, they were trying out a variety of attacks and line-ups ahead of their decisive title clash.
NashCopy also welcomed back Lize-Mari Theron from injury and despite looking rusty from her time out she put away some solid spikes.
In the social leagues, the prospect of play-offs was averted as Royal Bank of Canada clinched Social One with a tight victory over Doyle Motors Bruisers and HSBC beat their nearest rivals Kingspin to claim Social Two to in their first season.
