‘Great way to sign off’ – coach Coutu
Wednesday 4th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.
Bels 0, Rangers 6
RANGERS gave Ian Coutu and Martin Cohu the perfect send-off last night. The red-and-blacks’ coaches step down at the end of the season and they can be proud of the way their players produced the goods on the big stage of the women’s cup final.
‘They played some very good football and it is a nice way for Martin and I to sign off,’ said Coutu.
‘Sometimes, if they are up for it, they can play like that and we didn’t need to say too much to them tonight.’
Bels, who were missing a couple of regulars including island squad member Kari-Anne Riber, put up a spirited performance at the Track but they could not create any clear-cut chances as they succumbed to the favourites.
Rangers took the lead on 6min. when Candice Simon applied a cool finish after Natalie Grainger and Emma Bougourd had played a neat one-two before Grainger delivered a pinpoint pass to her left-winger.
Midfielder Jemma Crouse fired home a free kick from the edge of the area to make it two before half-time and after the turnaround it was her sweetly-struck volley that made it three.
Becky Warren headed the fourth, set up by an excellent run and cross down the left from the impressive Simon before Guernsey forward Grainger finished with aplomb having been put through by Crouse’s pass.
Deep into stoppage time, Grainger grabbed her second with a simple tap in.
For Bels, Katie Robert and Dee Holmes posed a threat when in possession while Lyndsey Bougourd was strong in defence.
* THE St Andrew’s ground has closed for the rest of this season.
GFA fixtures secretary Garry Cortez said yesterday: ‘They [Rangers] just want to get some work done on it.
‘There were only four or five more games scheduled there this season and I am going to move those games to other grounds.’
*ST MARTIN’S were presented with the C&W Railway League trophy after their 6-1 victory over Port City at the KGV yesterday evening.
Saints wrapped up the title when they beat Bavaria Nomads 2-0 on Saturday and they celebrated in fine style against Port as Jamie Roussel scored four and Damien Le Tocq and Paul Trump one each.
