‘Ruined Icart fields’ complaint is checked

Tuesday 10th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

AN ICART resident has hit out at fly-tipping that he says is destroying the area. Graham Robert, 70, has lived his whole life in St Martin’s. He said that giant piles of tyres and other materials dumped in a field at La Rue des Marettes were a blight on the landscape.

‘This is a lovely area with fantastic scenery and it’s being ruined. I think it’s terrible,’ he said.

‘Whoever is doing it knows its wrong because they try to disguise it by dumping it behind the hedges.

‘I have walked these fields since I was a kid and I just want to protect them for my grandchildren and their future children.’

As well as the large piles of tyres, there is also evidence of the ground having been dug up and filled.

‘There’s lorry loads of stuff being dumped down here and I’ve seen it with my own eyes. I just want someone to tell me what’s going on because all the people that live around here are concerned about it.

‘It’s completely ruining an area that is an attraction for people visiting the island.’

He said the area was full of plush green fields until a few years ago.

‘We thought it was just going to be a one-off when it first happened but it has got worse and worse. I want to get it back to how it was when I was a kid. We are losing too much of Guernsey at the moment because of untidiness.

‘Lets get this sorted out because I love this island. I was born and bred here and that is why I’m fighting because I hate to see it ruined like this.’

Mr Robert said he had tried to complain to the authorities, but no one had got back to him with any answers.

‘Someone out there must know what’s going on. This must be sorted before it gets worse.’

Environment said it was trying to deal with Mr Robert’s complaint.

Minister David De Lisle said: ‘I understand that the first contact that the Environment Department planning division had with Mr Robert on this matter was Tuesday 3 April.

‘We have since tried to call Mr Robert to establish the precise area to which his complaint relates to but have not been able to contact him.

‘However, we will continue to try to establish contact with Mr Robert in order to ascertain the precise details of his complaint.’
