Priaulx quickest in Brno test

Wednesday 11th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

ANDY PRIAULX was the quickest driver over the two days of official World Touring Car Championship testing in Brno. The BMW Team UK star set the fastest times on both days in the Czech Republic.

Eight cars took part on the opening day, with the weather changing from sunny to overcast and cool temperatures with a few able to lap below Gabriele Tarquini’s pole position time from last year.

Priaulx clocked 2min. 11.208sec. in the afternoon to finish just 0.002sec. quicker than fellow BMW driver Jorg Muller.

‘The team has worked really well after Curitiba and my car was very good today,’ said the Sarnian, who is one of three men at the top of the drivers’ standings on 16 points after the opening meeting in Brazil.

‘I’m not that interested to be the fastest in testing, but this is promising for when we’ll be back here for the races.’

The temperature and the lap times dropped dramatically during the second day, with the former not topping 10C.

Times got faster and faster under the grey sky until Priaulx recorded 2-10.028, which was 2.2sec. under the 2006 pole position and 0.3sec. quicker than Muller, who was second once again.

All drivers covered hundreds of kilometres over the two days, with Augusto Farfus completing 196 laps of the 5.4km circuit compared to Muller with 187 and Priaulx, 184.

The next two rounds of the 2007 WTCC take place in Zandvoort, the Netherlands, on Sunday 6 May.
