North’s strikers fear

Friday 20th April 2007, 12:00AM BST.

NORTH’S normally towering strike force could be brought down to size for tomorrow’s Upton. Ever-present goal machine Simon Tostevin and partner AJ Saunders could both suffer heartache if they fail to overcome knee problems for the clash against Jersey Scottish at Springfield.

Saunders trained on Wednesday night and Tostevin is going to try and train tonight after picking up his injury in North’s 2-1 Jeremie Cup success against Trinity last Saturday.

‘We have had a fantastic season, win or lose. To go and win the Upton would be unbelievable. It would be the icing on the cake and a dream come true. That would be something else,’ said coach Mick Le Prevost.

He will not name his starting side until after training but confirmed the strike pair were the only two doubts, with everyone else available.

‘Neither played in the last half-hour of the Jeremie, but we won the game.

‘It will be very disappointing if neither can play because both have done really well and worked well together this year and have had a good understanding,’ he said.

‘Of course it would be a setback because they have played all season, but we will have to get on with it.’

North last played and lost in the Upton to Jersey Scottish 2-0 in the last replay in 1992.

The most recent time they won it was two years previously against Jersey Wanderers.

‘Everyone is looking forward to the game. It’s no good going over there if you are not confident.

‘It’s a cup final and anything can happen, but we are going over there with the right attitude,’ said Le Prevost.

Eight Scottish players feature in Jersey’s Muratti squad announced yesterday – skipper David Brodie, Paul Aitken, Ross Crick, Scott Devlin, Paul Duxbury, James Scott, Ryan Lumsden and Ali Santos.

Scott and Aitken are both uncapped.

Scottish could have three ex-professionals on display tomorrow in their eighth Upton appearance in the last 15 seasons – former Queen’s Park and Clydebank player Brodie, Santos from Torquay United and one-time Exeter City man Mark Brown.

Brown has not played at all this season after buying a house and doing it up, but has been back training recently.

That could spell bad news for North as Scottish coach Pat Brennan also has a full squad to select from.

‘He is a great player and will be in contention – it’s given everyone a lift,’ said Brennan last night.

‘Everybody is available – we have everyone back that could play.’

Scottish will be aiming to avenge the ‘Upton rehearsal’ at Northfield last month when the chocolate-and-blues beat them 3-2 in the Jeremie Cup semi-final.
