HEALTH minister Peter Roffey has refused to comment on claims that patients have been abused at the King Edward VII Hospital. But he confirmed that two members of staff, thought to be auxiliary nurses, have been suspended.

Deputy Roffey said: ‘Two members of staff have been suspended and an investigation is taking place concerning an alleged incident two weeks ago.’

He would not go into any more detail.

The hospital provides rehabilitation, continuing care and day-hospital services for patients with physical needs, primarily for people over 55.

The family of one patient said there was concern about the suspensions, which are alleged to have involved cruelty to or harsh treatment of patients.

‘What we have heard is very concerning and we don’t want the Health Department to sweep it all under the carpet so that nothing comes of it,’ they said.

‘Patients can be here a long time and you don’t want to hear of people ill-treating others.’

They added: ‘Generally, you can’t speak highly enough of the place.’

It is not clear whether patients have been injured as a result of the alleged actions.

Guernsey’s Royal College of Nursing representative, Bev Clark, also refused to comment.

The 100-bed King Edward VII has a team of 118 staffing four wards and a 20-patient day unit.

Allan Grut ward has 24 rehabilitation beds and Kinnersly, Saward and Giffard provide continuing care for the elderly and incapacitated.

Activities offered include sports, writing, gardening and keep fit.
