Airport display traces story of bank’s 40 years

Thursday 3rd May 2007, 12:00AM BST.

A CELEBRATION of pioneering and world changing events during the last 40 years is on display at the airport. Rothschild has put together the exhibition to mark the 40th anniversary of its operation in the island.

The boards include timelines detailing island, UK, world and company events and milestones since Rothschild first opened an office in Guernsey in 1967.

These range from the first colour TV arriving in Guernsey that year to the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The Rothschild history includes milestones over the past 40 years such as the bank pioneering the use of offshore roll-up funds in 1981 and its involvement in the 1985 funding syndication for the financing of the submarine electricity link between the Channel Islands and France.

Director David Oxburgh said the displays had been compiled with the help of the company’s archive within its London headquarters.

‘The Rothschild Archive preserves the record of a family that is widely recognised for the major contribution it has made to the economic, political and social history of many countries throughout the world,’ said Mr Oxburgh.

Last week, Melanie Apsey from the archive visited the island to share the family history with local staff.

She said the eight boards which make up the exhibition looked fantastic.

They had been displayed first at a drinks reception hosted by the bank last month and Mr Oxburgh said the company had been keen to share them with the wider community.
