Golden goodbye is a strong possibility

THE hoped-for gold rush didn’t materialise yesterday, but Guernsey added another two to their tally. And there is every chance that there will be a bumper crop on today’s final day of the 12th NatWest Island Games.
One of yesterday’s golds came from men’s freestyle relay team in the pool, while the other came from star athlete Dale Garland.
Garland, on whom the island has relied for multiple golds at previous Games, has restricted his schedule in Rhodes due to the injury which had put his appearance in doubt.
But he showed he was in a different class by blasting to the 400 metres title in 46.7sec.
That bettered his own Games record of 47.79 which he set on the Foote’s Lane track in 2003.
Tom Druce took bronze in that race and these two are among those expected to deliver more golds today.
The swimmers rounded off a successful Games with another big haul of medals topped off by golds for the mixed 8 x 50 freestyle and men’s 4 x 100 freestyle relay teams.
But the final day of competition could be a prosperous one for the team before they begin their return journey.
On the athletics track, Lee Merrien is a hot favourite in the 1,500 metres and the two 4 x 400 relay squads and the men’s 4 x 100 team could also cross the line first.
In the tennis, Dom McLuskey and Patrick Ogier are guaranteed silver after reaching the doubles final. But if they are to claim gold they have to beat the strong Bermudan pair of Jenson Bascome and Andy Bray.
The table tennis players are in contention for six medals with a good chance of a few golds among those, particularly from the women.
And then there is the closing event of the Games, the triathlon, in which Alan Rowe and Sam Herridge are strong contenders for gold.
