Kim and Aggie eye up home of a ‘dirty beggar’

ONE of Guernsey’s best-known politicians could be in for the feather duster treatment on national TV. Deputy John Gollop yesterday agreed ‘in principle’ to put his home on the spot for Channel 4′s How Clean Is Your House?
Celebrity cleaner Kim Woodburn demanded that he appear after she saw pictures of the inside of his house at the weekend’s Lord’s Taverners’ cricket match in Sark.
Ms Woodburn said she thought it would be perfect for the show.
‘Oh my God! How does he eat in that kitchen?
‘This house and the fact that it’s in Guernsey would make a fabulous show,’ she said.
‘I can tell he doesn’t put the garbage out. Look at those pans! The dirty beggar.’
Deputy Gollop admitted that a good clean-up was probably long overdue and said it might be a fun way of getting the job done.
‘It’s certainly something worth thinking about, although I fear I might be in the Challenge Anneka category, more suited to the combined expertise of a team of people who normally build Romanian orphanages in three days,’ he said.
‘I have a lot of excess paper lying around, as well as too many clothes and computer parts that don’t work properly.
‘It’s hard to do the vacuuming and scrubbing with so much clutter in the way.’
How Clean Is Your House? is currently on the lookout for messy homeowners to appear in its sixth series.
The hit show regularly attracts more than four million viewers who watch the worst domestic disasters made over by Ms Woodburn and Aggie Mackenzie.
Deputy Gollop’s home was previously offices and a guest house before he bought it seven years ago.
He opened his doors to the Guernsey Press in 2003 for a feature on decluttering.
He said that he had received some criticism from people for the state of his living space and believed that was due to Guernsey’s conservative nature.
‘Historically, people are obsessed with acquiring property here, perhaps more than anywhere else, so therefore the idea that someone doesn’t spend every waking hour pruning their garden is highly controversial,’ he said.
‘I’m not the wealthiest person in the world so I can’t afford a housekeeper and I’m not married or with a partner.
‘I’m also out at meetings or events all day, so don’t have the time to clean that often. When I do, it tends to be in spasmodic blitzes. And because I suffer from Asperger’s, cleaning is not really in my nature either.
‘If anything, my house is probably worse now than it was four years ago. I’d have to take some advice about it, but it sounds like a good idea.’
