‘Purchase is good news – if it’s true’

FURTHER Barclay brothers’ investment in Sark would benefit Guernsey’s economy. Commerce and Employment minister Stuart Falla, whose building firm was responsible for the construction work done in Brecqhou, said he had no information on the reported purchases of tenements and freehold land, but added that if it was true it would be good news.
‘I cannot speak on their behalf, but what is good for Sark is good for Guernsey and the whole Bailiwick,’ he said.
‘I’m fairly confident that the brothers would invest in the island only if they were confident in Sark’s economy and when they do something, they do it well,’ he added.
Deputy Falla said he was aware of their purchase of the Beau Regard Hotel and the Bel Air.
‘It would not surprise me if they made a big investment with the idea to rejuvenate Sark’s economy.
‘If they have bought properties or tenements, you have to remember that there must also have been sellers who are therefore willing to sell.
‘If people are selling, it is because they might not have as much confidence in the island’s economy as the Barclays. It takes two to tango,’ he said.
A spokesperson for the Barclays yesterday declined to comment on reports of further purchases of real estate in Sark.
Chief Minister Mike Torode said he had heard rumours of the purchases but nothing to qualify the speculation.
‘The rumour has been circulating for a couple of days,’ he said ‘but at the moment that is just a rumour and there is no way that the States of Guernsey can get involved in what the Barclay brothers do with their money in Sark or anywhere else.’
He added that if the stories of sales of the tenements and freehold land were true, it was unlikely to impact on Guernsey politically.
‘I don’t think it will have any effect on Chief Pleas because the Barclay brothers have consistently not taken up their seat, which they have had the opportunity to do for the last 12 years.
‘Guernsey has no political links with Brecqhou.’
