Priaulx fails to make his point

Monday 30th July 2007, 12:00AM BST.

WORLD touring car champion Andy Priaulx had a disappointing weekend in Sweden as he has left the Anderstorp track without a single point. However, while the gambles the BMW Team UK driver took over tyre choice didn’t pay off, the weekend was hardly any better for his championship rivals.

Priaulx went to Sweden joint second in the championship with fellow BMW 320si driver Augusto Farfus, just two points behind the Brazilian’s team-mate, Jorg Muller.

He leaves there third, with Farfus being the only one of the trio to score a point – this being due to a driver in front of him not being eligible to score points.

A disappointed, but philosophical, Priaulx said: ‘All weekend it was a matter of looking at the skies and trying to work out the best tyre choice.

‘In qualifying, the rain we wanted so we could make best use of the wet tyres came a few minutes too late to get me into the top 10, and then the same happened in the first race.

‘For race two we went for the dry option. Unfortunately we didn’t have time to make the necessary set-up changes, and then the track was still wet in places. My only consolation is the others hardly fared any better.’

In race one Priaulx moved up through the field from 14th on the grid to be the highest placed BMW driver in 11th.

If the rain that came as the chequered flag went out had come a few minutes earlier he was certain a points’ finish was on the cards.

Race two was a matter of looking for the right line and hoping the track would dry by the end. This was not to be and in the end 13th was all he could manage.

The championship now moves to Germany for rounds 15 and 16 at the Oschersleben track on 26 August, which in the past has been very successful for Priaulx and his fellow BMW drivers.
