Ogier top of pile
Saturday 4th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.
MR CONSISTENCY Karl Ogier tops the new bar billiards summer league. He is the new leader after beating players regularly over the past few weeks.
It showed there is no place for brotherly love on the billiards table as the only opponent to take a point from him over a three-week period was his brother Matt.
Ogier has beaten both Colin Stanford and Andy Rundle 3-0.
Week four saw some high scores, with three players scoring over 10,000 points.
Bob Chapple beat fellow island player Tom Oliver 3-0 with 16,870 points against 5,480. Terry Kenny also scored well with He 15,720 in his 3-0 win over Norman Wilkinson who potted 6,480.
Ian Champion returned from his travels to play Rundle.
His opponent scored a combined 10,860 and could only manage a 2-1 win, though, as Champion managed to beat him in their second game. Champion also managed to get a catch-up match but lost to the man who had introduced him to the game, Darren Ogier.
Ogier beat him 3-0 with 8,170 against 2,950 and also secured a good 2-1 victory against Bob Le Moignan.
Week five saw Chapple continue his high scoring with 17,000 and 3-0 win over 18-year-old newcomer Luke Oliver.
Tom Oliver also had a high-scoring win with 10,140 against Mark Burns, who played very well in their second game to snatch a point, when he must have been fearing the worst after his opponent scored nearly 9,000 of his points in the first game.
Champion shook off some of his holiday blues with a 2-1 victory over island player Kenny – scoring a high 11,010 against 5,800.
Another young rising star Robert Chapple, 20, continued his good form with a 2-1 win over Ogier. who loaded the table to frustrate the youngster in the first game. In the second, though, Chapple made some excellent breaks and a notable 5,000.
Week six saw the biggest scores of the season.
There had been some talk of Paul Dyer wanting to compete with the earlier high scores posted by Bob Chapple, notably the 21,970.
His game against fellow island player Kenny was a one-sided affair and after his opening break his opponent could only chalk his cue. He played the full time limit and scored 16,230.
But Kenny hit back with his chance at the table in the next game to secure 920 points.
With that Dyer was able to soon get back on the break and continued to play the rest of that game’s time, scoring a further 14,740.
With a total score of 30,970 it is doubtful the league will see a better score for some years to come.
