Alderney becomes Tinsel Town for week

Monday 6th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.

ALDERNEY Week is in full swing. The theme of this year’s festivities is Hollywood and residents could have been forgiven for thinking they had woken up in Tinsel Town on Saturday morning.

Overnight, organisers had erected the word HOLLYWOOD in huge white letters, mimicking the famous American landmark.

The week was officially opened by the winner of last year’s town crier competition, States member Bill Walden. This year’s victor was Tony Wesley. who will open the festivities next year.

Crowds at the bottom of Victoria Street were then treated to a show by the Alderney Pommerettes, who performed a number of dance routines.

There followed a parade up to Marais Square for children who had come dressed as characters from Disney films.

The procession was led by this year’s Miss Alderney, Marie-Clare Jean, and her maids of honour, Kaylee Chadney and Charlotte Neill.

In the afternoon there was a variety of beach games, including a mini triathlon and hobby horse races.

In the evening families gathered up on the Butes for a barbecue and a concert courtesy of local band Blooze Crewz.

Elsewhere, 18-year-old Matt Gaudion won the Mr Alderney competition held in the Campania pub.

His father is a previous holder of the title.

Later in the evening, hundreds of

people went down to the Corporation Quarry for a Woodstock-themed disco.

The fun continued yesterday with a singalong movie on the Butes.
