Time to look at airport options
Saturday 11th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.
IT IS important for Guernsey to look at options for the airport, according to the Chamber of Commerce. There has been a mixed reaction to the Public Services Department’s plan to meet an interested investor, with board members themselves openly sceptical about the prospect.
But Chamber of Commerce president Mark Trenchard was more upbeat.
‘We’re saying let’s have a genuine look at it and see what these people bring to the table,’ he said.
‘We’re aware of them – they’re credible operators – and we should be encouraged that they’re interested in looking at the airport.’
It is believed London-based Sedef Ashman would head the talks, aimed at securing a long-lease arrangement.
Mr Trenchard said it was inevitable a private operator would look to make a profit.
‘They might bring efficiencies and added value that make that acceptable,’ he said.
‘These are the issues that Public Services needs to consider, but we’re applauding the fact they are going to sit down with this operator – it may open up more avenues.’
He believes it is time to establish a 10-year blueprint for the facility.
Whether a third party was involved or not, there was an enormous amount of investment needed at the airport, said Mr Trenchard.
‘We have to be aware of the dangers and the risks and if Guernsey does go down that route, how best to protect the island. But it’s an interesting opportunity.
‘I think what’s critical is that if we did have a private operator, we’d see a different focus come through. It can work for or against you.’
Running the airport as a business would mean getting more passengers through, he said.
‘We don’t have airport operators in Guernsey, but we have people who have done the job extremely well. Is it possible to do it better? I think inevitably it is.’
There were shortcomings with the airport, he said, such as the length of the runway.
‘The Chamber of Commerce is a business-based body, but the airport is not just important for business – it’s important for Guernsey as a whole,’ said Mr Trenchard.
‘Looking at the options is seriously good news – it will then be up to Guernsey to decide.’
