Ulster Grand Prix challenge for ‘steep learning’ Guillou

Saturday 11th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.

MOTORBIKE rider Phil Guillou is heading off with his team for testing at Donington Park today. This is with the Gary Haslam Team to run new engine kit parts and adjust the new chassis for more flex with three Yamaha machines.

‘On my recent visit to Donington a month ago, I had two comfortable wins and the fastest laps of the race were over two seconds quicker than any other 250,’ he said.

Tomorrow he will be racing in the New Era 250 Superclub race – a 12-lap race – and is hoping for a good result.

Then on Monday Guillou travels with the team for the Ulster Grand Prix, which like the North West 200, will feature the best road race riders in the world.

‘As it is my first time there, it will be a steep learning curve,’ said Guillou.

He will have three 30-minute qualifying sessions on Wednesday, then two Dundrod national races on Thursday.

They are held over the same seven-mile long street circuit as the Ulster Grand Prix.

‘The circuit is very fast and the average lap speed is faster than any other circuit,’ he said.

The lap record is held by John McGuinness, who will be riding again this year.

‘On Saturday [18 August] the International Ulster Grand Prix will be held and a good result will depend on how quick I can get myself and the bike dialled in,’ said Guillou.

Haslam is a very experienced Grand Prix rider and nephew of the legendary Ron Haslam, who was in the island last weekend.
