Anti-masts march could draw 1,000
Saturday 18th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.
ORGANISERS of tomorrow’s march against the masts are hoping to attract more than 1,000 protesters. No More Masts has organised the opposition to Airtel’s application to erect more than 50. The walk will start at 2pm from North Beach car park and end at Frossard House, where a petition will be handed to Environment minister David De Lisle.
Nomm chairman Colin Fallaize said the group was hoping for a good turnout.
‘In view of the public support we have seen at meetings that have been held and the petition being signed around the island, we are certainly extremely hopeful it will be a turnout of 1,000.’
Mr Fallaize said the march would go ahead rain or shine.
‘No matter what the weather does, we will be down there and that’s for sure.’
Protesters will march along the front then up Fountain Street, Le Bordage, Rue du Pre and La Charroterie.
Sergeant Martin Harris said the police would not be closing the road but a motorcyclist and marked car would escort protesters along the route through Town.
‘We will have officers there for supervision as the procession leaves from North Beach.
‘We have been told to expect anywhere from 200 protesters, but it could be more.
‘If the march does attract a lot more, officers on shift will be called away from operations to assist those at the march.’
Deputy Mary Lowe said she was delighted that Deputy De Lisle had agreed to meet protesters and accept the petition on behalf of his department.
‘That’s why we would like to see as many people come as possible on the march.
‘It’s definitely a case of it will go ahead rain or shine.’
Deputy Lowe added that all States members had been invited to join the protest.
