Corson makes the most of Ward’s misfortune

Thursday 30th August 2007, 12:00AM BST.

IT WAS high-octane stuff in round seven of the Guernsey Kart and Motor Club’s Summer Championships at the Track on Sunday. And it was in the 100cc senior class of the Guernsey Autoelec sponsored round where the most exciting action took place.

After the heats it was Matt Corson and championship leader Andy Ward who were at the front of the grid for the final.

But a snapped chain in Ward’s machine denied the spectators another gripping encounter as Corson took the honours.

‘It was lucky but it was good,’ said Corson.

‘We were both going really well all day. We had a good tussle in the first heat.

‘I feel sorry for Andy for losing his chain and you don’t want to win that way.’

In the opening heat, with Ward and Corson both fired up to try and secure the championship, the former led for the first three laps but Corson made a daring move on his rival at Marais Corner to take the lead.

They then proceeded to swap the lead twice more but at the end it was Ward out on top with Corson in second and Dave Hockaday in third ahead of his son Ayrton, who finished fourth.

In heat two, Colin Laine was back on form to lead for eight laps.

However, with Corson and Ward tight on his bumper, the next lap saw them get through with Ward eventually taking the chequered flag.

Behind the Rotax Max drivers, the others were all running closely together with Alice Le Tissier in fine form, followed by Stuart Moorat, Ian Dodsworth and Nick Ford, on his debut, putting on a fine show.

The start of heat three saw carnage at the first corner with Dodsworth leading but getting tagged from behind going into Press Box Corner to see Ayrton Hockaday, Laine and Moorat all involved. And with Nick Ford in the lead on his first race meeting, the race was red-flagged and stopped before the end of lap one.

Moorat received attention to minor injuries and was sidelined for the rest of the meeting.

The restart went well and it was Le Tissier in front, but again it was Ward and Corson knocking on the door and by lap four they passed to take first and second place respectively with Le Tissier third, Dodsworth fourth and Ford fifth.

With three first places Ward was on pole for the final and Corson alongside.

But it did not have the spark of the heats as Ward had to retire with his broken chain, leaving the track clear for Corson to take first place with Ayrton Hockaday second, Le Tissier a fine third, Ford fourth and Dodsworth in fifth spot.

In the ever-growing cadet class the racing was very close throughout the day with Jordan Caradeuc having two firsts and a fourth place.

Angus Torode had first, second and third finishes, Cameron Davey grabbed a first and two fourths, Remy Laine took a second and two thirds, together with newcomers Toni Snell and Connor Le Cras performing well.

This gave Caradeuc pole position for the final with Torode next to him and it promised to be an exciting race until Torode was black-flagged for allegedly tapping the driver in front and was excluded from the remainder of the race.

That gave Caradeuc an unchallenged run to the finishing line with Davey second, Laine third and Snell and Le Cras in fifth and sixth place.

The junior minimax class started well for ‘Girl Power’ driver Tia Harvey who drove a great race to finish first, in front of Adam Law and Daniel Ridley.

Heat two saw Harvey in the lead again but on lap three both Law and Ridley got past, a position they all kept till the flag.

The third heat was a flag to flag win for Law, followed by Ridley and Harvey with the same result for the final.

In the gearbox 125cc class, championship leader Matt Ford recorded wins in heats one and three but had a minor mechanical problem in heat two, which allowed Daniel James a first.

Ford had a gear linkage problem and had to come in for repairs, which left the way for James to win the final with Simon Davey second and Ford third.

The next event is an all day non-championship race at the Track on Sunday 9 September from 10am-4pm and the last summer championship race will be held on Sunday 23 September.

Corson is hoping for some more of the same.

‘I managed to pull some points back on Andy and we’ve got the last one to go,’ he said.

‘Hopefully we’ll see how things go. He needs to have another bad one and I need to win.’
