Drive-by shooters hunted by police
Tuesday 11th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
THREE people were hit by pellets from a BB-type gun fired from a car on Saturday afternoon. The shootings have been condemned by police chief George Le Page.
He said he was treating them very seriously.
‘These people have to carefully think through the consequences of their actions,’ he said.
‘Not only is this behaviour totally irresponsible, it’s extremely frightening for the people on the receiving end.
‘There have been previous occurrences like this, but not for some time. We are treating it very seriously indeed.
‘If someone points something with the appearance of a real weapon out of a car window, we have to deal with it as if it was a genuine firearm. It’s really not on.’
The first incident was at about 2.30 when a 61-year-old woman was shot in the arm when she was walking at Route de Cobo, Castel.
She described the vehicle as possibly green or silver.
Someone was then struck by a pellet fired from a small car, possibly silver, at Camp du Roi at about 3.30.
A person waiting at a bus stop at King’s Mills was also hit by a pellet from a car as it passed at around 5.30.
Police believe it was the same vehicle involved in all three incidents and would like to trace the driver and passengers before someone is seriously hurt.
Chief Inspector Ruari Hardy said the incidents were being treated as assaults.
‘We ask anyone who knows anything to come forward and assist us with our enquiries,’ he said.
‘We are keen to identify both the vehicle and the occupants as soon as possible.’
* Anyone with information about the shootings should contact police on 725111 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
