‘Speed limit reminder is now needed’
Tuesday 11th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
MORE traffic calming measures are needed near schools. Castel deputy Tom Le Pelley, who was behind the introduction of a 25mph speed limit on the roads surrounding them, would now like to see flashing reminder signs brought in as well.
‘Some of those light systems that don’t tell you what speed you are doing, but tell you that you are going too fast – that’s a very good reminder,’ he said.
‘It’s probably as effective as having a police car outside the school gates.’
The deputy Public Services minister also wants to see changes made to the road by St Andrew’s School.
A controversial speed hump system was introduced two years ago and has attracted criticism. It is due to be replaced.
‘I’m associated with Steps ‘Stop Traffic Endangering Pedestrian Safety’ and it was our recommendation that the humps at St Andrew’s be removed and other measures taken,’ he said.
‘There could be a filter-in-turn or maybe lights instead of physical measures in the road.’
The 12-month speed limit trial, which has just been extended, was brought in after consultations between the schools, parish officials, the Education Department and Steps.
Now a number of head teachers have said that would like to see the lower limit made permanent.
Deputy Le Pelley agrees.
‘I do hope it becomes a part of the permanent review and become adopted,’ he said.
La Houguette head Danielle Cassell is a supporter of the 25mph scheme, saying that children’s safety is paramount.
But she believes having the speed limit in place during the school holidays means that drivers become used to breaking it when there are no children.
She would like to see the limit activated during term-time only to help counteract this.
Deputy Le Pelley also thinks that this is a good idea.
‘I’m all for it being relaxed during the school holidays,’ he said.
‘There’s a lot to be said for a varied speed limit.’
