£20K for charity and the Legends are coming back
Wednesday 12th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.
AN ESTIMATED £20,000 was raised for local charities by the visit of the Liverpool Legends football team. And the Anfield stars of the past will be back next year.
Players such as John Barnes, John Wark and Ian Rush were joined by Guernsey’s ex-Saints star Matt Le Tissier for a match against the Bels Priaulx side.
They also attended a dinner organised by the Guernsey branch of the Liverpool Supporters’ Club, all to raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice and Help a Guernsey Child.
About 3,500 islanders turned out at the Track to watch the Legends come back from 0-4 down to beat Bels 6-4, with Le Tissier scoring twice for the Reds.
One of the organisers, Alan Jenner, was delighted.
‘It went really well,’ he said. ‘We couldn’t have asked for any more.’
He said there was a good chance it would become an annual event.
‘The Liverpool team are going to come back next year for definite,’ he said.
‘They really enjoyed it and said they can’t wait to come back. The atmosphere was amazing and we are really pleased.’
Mr Jenner said he had been worried the Legends would be on the receiving end of a thrashing.
‘I was slightly concerned when it was 4-0 to Bels after 20 minutes,’ he said. ‘But the Legends turned it round as only they could. It was a fantastic match.’
He praised the attitude of the stars.
‘The Liverpool players wanted to have access to all the fans.
‘They didn’t want to be kept apart from the spectators and it was great to see them mixing.
‘Nothing was too much trouble for them, they were brilliant.’
Liverpool fan Andy Willcocks said it had been well worth the £12 entry fee.
‘It was a really good game,’ said the 25-year-old.
‘It was packed as well, which made for a really good atmosphere.
‘John Barnes was my favourite player when I was a kid so it was great to see him play.’
