Arrests show that we mean business

Wednesday 12th September 2007, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY’S chief of police has vowed to clamp down on antisocial behaviour. Five teenagers were arrested at Cobo in the early hours of Saturday and concerns about abuse from youths have been voiced by residents of the Grand Bouet.

George Le Page said the force had adopted a proactive approach and appealed to parents for help in tackling the problem.

‘Frequent contact has been made with residents on the Bouet estate and patrols are carried out on a regular basis. We do take this very seriously,’ he said.

‘If confronted by antisocial behaviour, we will deal with it vigorously, as demonstrated by the weekend’s arrests.

‘We experienced a large amount of antisocial behaviour at various locations around the island, which saw police officers committed to a number of disturbances and several arrests being made.

‘Regrettably from time to time antisocial behaviour is not confined to one particular area, but we do endeavour to address this problem.

‘We will continue to do all that’s in our power with the resources that are at our disposal.’

Mr Le Page added that such behaviour was not something the police should be tackling in isolation. He sought to involve other agencies.

‘If we come across young people in an area where problems are being caused, but circumstances do not allow for an arrest, we send letters to parents giving advice and making suggestions,’ he said.

‘In the main, the majority of parents have been very supportive.

‘While one doesn’t want to be too prescriptive, one has to say, モdo you know where your child is and who they are associating with?ヤ.

‘We can’t do it alone and sometimes a little bit of questioning from parents can go a long way.’
