Double doubles gold for Sarnians

Friday 5th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

GUERNSEY pairs won both the mixed and the men’s doubles crowns at the alternative games at Beau Sejour. Martin Watts and Alison Strobridge had to come from a game down to defeat the Cayman Islands’ Dean Watson and Courtney Stafford. The visitors took the opener 11-10 and were 8-3 up in the second before the Sarnians rallied back to win that game 11-8 and the decider 11-9.

It was an all-Guernsey affair in the final of the men’s doubles as Watts and Martin Roberts took on Simon Gaudion and Lawrence Graham, who took the lead by grabbing the first game 11-8.

But they could not keep up their momentum and their opponents won the next two 11-8 and 11-8.

‘The mixed doubles was the best match,’ said tournament organiser Peter Bridgeman.

‘The Caymans nearly caused an upset. The Caymans were a little bit off the pace in the singles but doubles is a good leveller.

‘It’s all about knowing your partner,’ Bridgeman added.
