Oberlands tragedy – toxic gas suspected

Saturday 6th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

POLICE are looking into carbon monoxide poisoning as a possible cause of death of an elderly couple in St Martin’s. A toxicology report will reveal if Joyce and Raymond Gauvain died from inhaling fumes in their Les Oberlands home.

A post-mortem examination took place yesterday and the couple’s son travelled from the UK to be with relatives in the island.

Mr Gauvain, 65, worked part-time at Guernsey Electricity and it is understood that Mrs Gauvain suffered from long-term lung problems.

A GE employee working across the road from the couple’s house on Thursday said that he had given Mr Gauvain’s mobile phone number to a police officer who had been called to the scene.

‘She tried calling him but he did not answer,’ he said.

‘After she had got inside the house, she came back outside and asked us for help getting the people outside, but it was too late.’

Guernsey Gas confirmed that it had been asked by the Fire and Rescue Service to attend the scene on Thursday but was then informed that it was not needed.

GE managing director Ian Watson yesterday paid tribute to the couple and remarked how well liked by staff Mr Gauvain – who had worked at the utility for more than 40 years – had been.

Police are not treating the deaths as suspicious.
