Fast and frantic action expected

Friday 12th October 2007, 12:00AM BST.

MOTOCROSS’S showcase event of the year is coming this weekend. Held at Pleinmont Point, the Fuel Supplies (CI) Ltd two-day event is in its third year.

‘This is the biggest one we run,’ said Jon Le Page of the organising committee.

The competitors start as young as six years old on purpose-built racing motorbikes which have suspension systems specifically designed to soak up all the lumps and bumps of the Torteval track.

Nationally the sport has developed riders who go on to specialise in the extreme sport of FMX, which was seen at the extreme sports display on Liberation Day at the North Beach.

The Guernsey Motocross Championship runs throughout the year, but with a break in the summer between April and September.

The championship started in January and it resumes on 27 October.

This weekend does not contribute to the championship points. Instead trophies are up for grabs in each class.

There are six categories that have a maximum of 20 riders in each.

The autos class for six

to seven years old is being fought out between

Riley King and Jordan Palmeri.

Jersey’s Ryan Caurel leads the way in the junior class for seven to 10-year-olds while Frankie Brouard is hot on his heels.

In the intermediate class for nines to 12s, Michael Dempster is out in front closely followed by Freddie Bates.

They use 85cc two-stroke or 150cc four-stroke bikes with small wheels, while the seniors’ class for 11 to 15 years old uses the same machines but with bigger wheels. Luke Lesbirel, Dexter Le Sauvage and Liam Guille are gunning for that title.

In the MX1 class that uses powerful 250cc two-stroke or up 450cc four-stroke bikes, Anyon Robilliard and Carl Wallbridge are the top two.

But it is in the MX2 class where the action could be the most intense tomorrow and Sunday.

In the championship Marc Cox is the man to beat as he leads with 600 points while Mark de la Mare is second with 549 and Hamish Moriaty takes third spot with 545.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing some tight and hotly contested racing and to seeing a good crowd there,’ said Le Page.

‘There’s nothing better than seeing a crowd.’

The action starts at 10.30am tomorrow.
