Mosaic donation shows support is set in stone

A SERIES of initiatives for Guernsey’s Scouts will mark Granite Le Pelley’s 25th-anniversary celebrations. Included is the creation of a new water activities centre
on a former vinery reservoir site.
Founded by Stuart Falla and Mick Le Pelley in 1982, Granite Le Pelley has grown to become a leading Channel Islands stone company, with its products seen in many of Guernsey’s and Jersey’s most prominent
architecture and public monuments.
As part of this year’s celebrations, the firm, which sources natural stone worldwide and manages its processing through factories across Europe, held a party for 150 colleagues in a marquee at Icart in the summer.
‘It was a marvellous party and it was a chance to stop and reflect on everything that we have achieved,’ said managing director Phil Le Roy.
‘For years we have been able to provide quality craftsmanship and that has really been down to the people who have been involved.’
As part of the invitation, each guest was given a small piece of granite, which they then used later to create the mosaic that will rest at the entrance of the Guernsey Scouts headquarters at Rue Maingy, Vale.
More than £500 was also raised from a raffle and that money will go towards creating the activities centre.
Granite Le Pelley director Richard Breban had been liaising with the Scouts.
He said that, as part of the company’s celebrations, it wanted to be involved in a project that would contribute to the community.
‘We were asked to help renovate the Scouts’ headquarters and when we found out that it was also the Scouts’ 100th anniversary, it seemed fitting for us to support them.’
The company is rebuilding the headquarters’ main entrance wall and renovating its patio and picnic area.
‘The mosaic is of the Scouts’ emblem.
The Bailiwick commissioner for the Guernsey Scout Association Richard Leale said it was great to have the support.
‘We do rely to a large extent on people’s generosity and the Rue Maingy site reaches out to a far wider community in terms of other youth organisations, schools and sports teams.
‘We are the largest youth organisation on the island and are grateful to Granite Le Pelley for including us in their celebrations.’
