Sandpiper ‘likely to dispense with Safeway brand’

Thursday 8th November 2007, 12:00AM GMT.

THE Safeway brand could be leaving Guernsey as part of Sandpiper’s continued review and analysis of its company assets. Sandpiper chief executive Tony O’Neill (pictured) reiterated the company’s planned investment and overhaul at the Rohais site in an interview with BBC Guernsey on Tuesday.

Mr O’Neill said the interview had revealed nothing different from what he had told the Guernsey Press at the end of September, when he was quoted as saying: ‘One of the manifestations to the long-term goals of the company will be a significant investment into our Safeway shop in the Rohais.

‘The infrastructure, layout and how it operates need to change.

‘It’s a shop in need of complete investment to better meet the needs of our customers.’

Speaking yesterday, Mr O’Neill said the development of a number of sites was in the pipeline.

‘We would be likely to dispense with the Safeway brand but we haven’t made any definitive decisions and it’s still only an option we are considering.

‘While we have had to close one loss-making store at Ville au Roi, there are similar sites, such as the one at Perelle, that we have already developed, and at L’Islet, where we have just had planning permission granted – which we are going to be investing in.’

Mr O’Neill said Sandpiper was also planning an ‘exciting’ development for the forecourt of its Checkers store in St Martin’s, but that he was not in a position to release further details at present.
