Galacticos are getting closer
Tuesday 5th February 2008, 12:00AM GMT.
GREMLIN Galacticos turned in yet another devastating performance to bring Sporting Lions back down to earth after their previous week’s success. The Image Group Premier Division leaders won 10 frames on the trot to extend their lead to 22 points.
Gordon Irish won the Lions sole frame against Adrian Lihou, which briefly tied the score at 1-1, but thereafter the Galacticos enjoyed a comfortable ride.
None did more so than Glenn Le Prevost whose 3-0 win culminated in a fine 75 clearance to stretch his unbeaten record to 11 matches.
That has lifted him to second place on his own in the aggregates on 33 frames, one ahead of Adam Shorto who, along with Paul Le Sauvage, completed the rout.
Le Prevost is now just two frames behind Martyn Desperques after the Ex-Service Chirpers captain dropped a frame in their 9-3 win over Ex-Service Reds.
Desperques opened brightly enough with a 72 break against the rising talent of Roscoe Cloarec, but an entertaining second saw him lose 78-71 on the final black.
That triggered a six-frame winning run for the Chirpers with Adrian Holley and John Skillett both completing a 3-0 win, the latter assisted by a break of 43.
The late rally came from the Reds’ Jim Wilson, whose two frames could prove vital in a relegation battle that is developing into the tensest ever seen in the Premier Division.
La Villette Gremlins remain on course for their best ever finish. With just six games to go, they held on to second by matching the Chirpers’ victory.
The early exchanges were tight, though, as Adrian Trustum and North Legionnaires’ Rick de Garis traded 2-1 wins, but from a tied score, Ian Platt and Graham Peel romped away with the last six frames.
With North Social L-Plates not playing, Ex-Service Hot Butts had the chance to significantly extend their lead in the Skipco First Division, but they failed to do so by spectacularly crashing to a first league defeat.
Gremlin B reignited the title chase by first racing into a 4-0 lead when Barry Martel ended Lee Bullock’s unbeaten run that had lasted since the opening fixture and Andrew Wilkinson won in an uncustomary opening position.
Pat Le Gallez then sealed matters with a 24 break in the fifth frame, before the Hot Butts took two of the last three.
It was a similar story at the Sarnian Club where the Sharks also stormed into a 5-0 lead against North Legion Young Ones.
Unsurprisingly, it was Andy Paul and Mark Jeffreys who grabbed the first four, with the pair still vying at the top of the aggregates on 21 frames each. A 22 clearance from Simon Marquis clinched the win but, unlike the Hot Butts, the Young Ones took the last three frames, with Peter Crispini getting two of them.
Sporting Alliance are still looking for an elusive first victory after just failing at the last hurdle against the Sarnian Numptys.
Ian Morrison set up the chance by beating Richard Brache, although Danny Breton hit back to square the match at 3-3.
A 26 break from Mark Piper re-established the Alliance’s lead, but Sean Simms took the last to secure the draw.
The promotion battle in the Banks & Flouquet Second Division is hotting up.
Sarnian Breakers fought back from 3-1 down against North Social G to edge into the lead but both had to settle for a draw.
The other matches saw North Legion and Gremlin ‘derbies’ end 5-3.
North Legion B overcame the Aces while Guzzlers took a long-overdue first league win of the season.
Leaders Sporting Musketeers slipped to a surprise defeat in the Mariners’ Inn Third Division when Rob de Carteret claimed the only win on the night to seal a 5-3 victory for Giba Dorios.
There were similar stories at the North Legion and Gremlin clubs with wins for NL United and the Mixed Bunch, but the performance of the week came from Giba Two who recorded the division’s first whitewash win.
* Kevin de Carteret was unable to repeat his Billiards Straight victory over Peter Colley, but a Handicap win takes him to joint top with Milford de Carteret and Mike Hall. One other match played saw Barry Pallot stay neck and neck with Colley in the Straight, but Mark Jeffreys won the Handicap to stay in touch with the leading trio.
