Love in airwaves at BBC Guernsey

Thursday 14th February 2008, 12:00AM GMT.

BBC Guernsey presenters Jim Cathcart and Claire Ozanne have tuned in to the same frequency by getting engaged. They met in the summer of 2006 when Mr Cathcart began a two-year attachment at the station from BBC Radio Berkshire.

‘I never dreamed that I would end up marrying a Guernsey girl,’ he said.

Originally from Kent, Mr Cathcart, 34, spent 10 years with the BBC before coming to Guernsey, having also worked at BBC Solent.

Former Ladies’ College student Miss Ozanne, 25, started work at BBC Guernsey in 2005 after studying philosophy and theology at Heathrop College, University of London.

She was producing her future fiance’s morning show before she moved to the news team.

‘I thought he looked the public schoolboy, sporty sort of type,’ she said.

‘I never thought it would develop in the way it has and it certainly wasn’t love at first sight.’

The couple had been together for about a month before they told work colleagues and a further 14 months have passed.

They have tried to keep their relationship private and colleagues were asked not to mention it on air.

‘When you work for the media you have to accept that a certain amount of your life is lived in public, but it’s not something I look for,’ said Mr Cathcart. ‘If you work in the public eye, people will be interested in your private life.’

The couple enjoy the outdoor life and have taken up kayaking.

They plan to get married next year.

After giving Miss Ozanne’s mother the news of their engagement last week, they travelled to the UK to tell his parents.

Work colleagues were told via email on Friday.

‘We got lots of texts and calls from people over the weekend congratulating us,’ said Miss Ozanne. ‘People said it was good news because they know us so well and people were almost trying to plan our stag and hen nights before we got back.’

Friend and fellow BBC Guernsey presenter Simon Fairclough said everybody at the station had been delighted with the news.

‘We have to deal with bad news on an almost daily basis and that’s what makes the headlines, so it’s nice to have a good news story and it’s given all of us a boost.’
