Standing again? 11 still to declare

Friday 15th February 2008, 12:00AM GMT.

WITH just 10 weeks to go, 11 deputies are still undecided whether to stand in the general election. But deputy Education minister Wendy Morgan was one who confirmed yesterday that she would.

Of the 11 who have yet to make up their mind, Deputy Brian Gabriel is 90% certain he will not stand on 23 April.

And Social Security minister Diane Lewis said it was highly unlikely she would seek another term.

Housing minister Dave Jones said he would be in a position to make an announcement at the end of next week, while deputies Graham Guille, Sam Maindonald and John Gollop all said they needed more time to consider.

Commerce and Employment minister Stuart Falla announced earlier in the week that he would wait until his 23 March birthday to decide.

Deputy Morgan said that unless something unexpected happened, she was 100% certain of standing.

‘I’ve got a lot of unfinished business. I’m concerned that so many people with experience are leaving the States and I believe I can make a positive contribution.’

Deputy Gollop, although needing more time to think about it, said he ‘hoped’ to stand.

It seemed to him that many people were already assuming he would, but that was not necessarily the case.

‘I have been working on various other business ideas and sorting a lot of stuff out and I want clarity on those areas before I make up my mind.

‘But if I do stand, I don’t want a repeat of this term where I ended up as a full-time politician and part of so many committees that I lost time to deal with constituency issues and my social and personal life.’

Deputy Maindonald said she was still working too hard on finishing this four-year term to think about the next.

‘I’m not going to be able to make a decision till the beginning of March. I’m not a full-time politician so I have to factor that in.’

Deputy Health minister Dave Grut, pictured far left, said: ‘At the moment I don’t want my intentions to be known.
