‘UK should take over the islands’

Friday 29th February 2008, 2:29PM GMT.

GUERNSEY should be absorbed into the UK to stop it acting as a tax haven, a former Bank of England official has said.

Willem Buiter, who was an external member of the bank’s Monetary Policy Committee, is urging global action to stop tax evasion through offshore territories such as the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

‘The special status of these strange entities is not cute – it’s an enabler and facilitator of unethical and illegal behaviour,’ he said in the Financial Times.

Who does this person think he is ? what right do we have to absorb another country into own ?
The only people who could make such a decision would be the islanders themselves, not the UK.
If the UK did not have such high tax rates this issue would not appear.
By the way I am not rich enough to have money offshore and I am not an islander, unless you consider England an island.
I am fed up with self important people telling us what others should do.

I agree with Mike. I am a regular visiter to Guernsey and i believe that the fact the Guernsey, and the rest of the islands, are independent is one off the charming things. The local people are abel to make up there own minds if the want to be a part of England.

This shrieks of ‘sour grapes’. I hope all of you donkeys will resist hoof and nail. The same applies to the Isle of Man. Some of these money people appear to enjoy stirring up trouble. They can’t mind their own business and tney want to attention seek with off beat and totally unnecessary Comments. Carry on as always. Display two fingers.

So Guernsey should be intergrated into the UK Just like Jersey if some people had their way.Well the answer to that is NO WAY.The UK is in a financial mess it has the war in Iraq ,and Afghanistan to finance, and lets not forget the Billions spent on northern rock.On top of that it has the EU calling the shots working to close down so called Tax Havens. If the Island is to continue enjoying its current status,Guernsey must work closer with Jersey to resist such pressure.

Although I have lived overseas for nearly ten years, I keep a close watch on Island news. It is such a pity that the we have a Government that lacks leadership and vision in not openly defying such claims.

The only true solution to the offshore British Islands to maintain true independance is a unity on a political front that is agreed solely on the survival of the uniqueness they have. Forget about 0-10, forget about the insiduous BBC licence fee and every other imposed rule, challenge the EU and challenge the home office, what sanctions could they really impose in this modern world?
