Museum pieces at risk in store

MOST of Guernsey’s heritage collection is at risk due to unsatisfactory storage conditions.

The museum service has tens of thousands of items in its care, ranging in size and value. These include such things as a 1970s milk carton, a complete fire engine and 20,000 insects.

The collection is currently housed at five sites, the main one being in St John’s Street. They cover a total of 800sq. metres but the department is looking to replace them with a facility measuring 1,700sq. metres. Culture and Leisure minister Peter Sirett said his department was desperate to see the matter addressed.

I worked for several years with Heather Sebire on the Lihou Island excavation, also archiving and recording finds in St John’s St as well as Alderney. I could be available for work if necessary and funds are available for travel and accommodation. I have worked with Phil de Jersey before as well as local volunteers.
