A COUPLE told yesterday how their broken-down car filled with water as the sea crashed over the L’Eree coast road.
Glenn Hockey and Megan Downes pulled Miss Downes’ eight-month-old daughter, Alexa, from the back of the Ford Escort as Monday night’s stormed lashed the area on the high-spring tide.
Miss Downes, 18, said they had heeded a police warning not to drive along the coast road from The Imperial Hotel towards their home further up the coast and to try to reach it from the other end.
They turned inland and drove down Route des Adams to L’Eree Hotel, where they spoke to someone whom they thought to be a civil protection volunteer. ‘We needed to get the baby’s things and he told us we could get through, but to go carefully as water and debris were coming over the wall,’ said Miss Downes.
Waves were crashing over so heavily that the couple could not see the deeper water ahead and the car’s engine eventually stopped.

What a muppet to drive a car along the coast road with waves coming over. then putting other peoples lives at risk to save them. she claims to live out there, if she does, she would know the way throught the lanes to avoid these areas like other locals do.

i used to live in guernsey and the waves are high but exciting, guess the guy thought he was good enough to get through. but should have put the baby first, then reading on he was driving ford escort, so guess he had no chance. surely he was advised by the beautiful lady sitting beside him,me i would have just sat there all night with her for company.

I used to live in Guernsey, now enjoying the glorious weather and lifestyle of Perth in Western Australia. What were these idiots thinking? Surely only a grockle, who didn’t realise that the waves got so big, would drive along the coast in this weather. Had they been drinking? They are totally irresponsible and foolish, obviously they don’t care about the safety of the baby.
