‘BBC would be fine with me’

GREG DYKE says no redundancies would be made at the BBC if he were still at the helm.

The former director-general, who quit in 2004, was speaking before the CIPD annual dinner at the Duke of Richmond Hotel on Friday evening. The BBC announced in October that it was to make 1,800 people redundant.

Mr Dyke said the broadcaster had not got a great licence-fee settlement, but it was by no means a disaster. ‘They have had quite a good run and I was lucky while I was there, but the situation is not quite as bad as we are being led to believe. ‘A lot of what’s happening there now are things that were planned during my time, such as the move to Manchester and iPlayer.’
