‘Shattered’ McFarlane lifts his first island title
Monday 26th May 2008, 9:29AM BST.
WHAT an eight days Garry McFarlane has just enjoyed.
Yesterday, thanks to a 7 and 5 victory over Steve Mahy, the 34-year-old Scot (pictured) added his first Island title to his course record of the previous weekend.
‘It’s been hectic and I am glad it’s over because I’m shattered,’ McFarlane said. The important passage of play in the final came during the morning round when, after 13 tight holes, McFarlane claimed three holes on the trot, two with birdies, to open up a substantial advantage at lunch.
However, he admitted that rather than outstanding golf, it had been a day of attrition. ‘It was not good golf today. I had to grind it out,’ he said. ‘My short game was a little bit better than Steve’s today, but we both played considerably better earlier in the week.’
