THE weather delayed the first Swan Rendezvous race yesterday.
It was due to start at 10am but bad weather held it up for almost an hour.More than 20 yachts took part in the event, which is sponsored by the Isle of Man Port and Starboard Yacht Club and is staged in the island every two years.
It opened on Sunday and finishes on Thursday.
Crews from around the UK and Europe travelled to Guernsey for cruising, racing and social activities. Two locally-based Swans are involved.
Martin Ozard, chairman of the organising committee, said more than 250 people were taking part.
‘This event promotes Guernsey as an attractive sailing destination and we have appreciated the support of Nautical Guernsey.’
Because of the time lost due to the delay of the first race, it was shortened. That meant race two was a longer course.
Overall, Christina, owned by Ben and Deb Mobley, took first place in division one with Desperado, owned by Richard Loftus, and Menedes, owned by A. C. Schirmer, in joint second.
Division two saw Banjaard, owned by John Falla, in joint first place with Philippides 2, owned by Richard Balding. John and Jan Wilson’s vessel, Flyover, took third place in both races. Today’s race is around Sark and starts at 10am.
The racing continues until Thursday, when Lt-Governor Sir Fabian Malbon will close the event with a prizegiving lunch.
