Progress on vinery use is welcomed

BUSINESS groups believe some derelict vinery sites could be developed as industrial units. Chamber of Commerce president Paul Luxon said a study should be carried out to determine how much land light industry needed to solve the current shortage.
‘We feel these service providers are invaluable to the people of Guernsey and providing an appropriate infrastructure to allow them to operate efficiently is of vital importance,’ he said. ‘Chamber is also conscious that available land is a rare commodity in the island. Perhaps an exceptional one-off innovative approach might be necessary, such as an appropriate change of use for certain non-sensitive derelict vinery sites very similar to how the open market register was created in the 1960s in terms of housing.
‘We are not suggesting that every greenhouse site is redeveloped as a warehouse or storage unit, but that a strategic review identifies the appropriate number of sites that would resolve the desperate need.’
