Cloudy water one of the problems behind poor catches

THE fishing shows little signs of improvement. It’s so bad it has become difficult to find any information that is newsworthy. Entries in the May Fish of the Month competition are so few it could well become the worst May ever recorded in the long history of the competition.

Members of the Bailiwick Bass Club tried a pegged match at Chouet. The weather was atrocious, with heavy pouring rain and strong winds so it was not surprising that only nine members entered. Suffice to say they did not have as much as a bite between them.

Two bright spots for shore anglers are Fort Doyle and Pembroke where mackerel have been giving well on the floats. Afloat it is no better.

There are reports of a few good catches but the vast majority of anglers are scratching to find even a few modest fish. There is much conjecture as to why things are so bad. The cloudy water is considered one of the problems. Visibility is so poor in some places that it could well affect the fish moving in.
