Island still trails UK on the Net

962980_9480028.jpgGUERNSEY still lags behind the UK when it comes to internet access. While London’s broadband users can go online at an average broadband speed of 4.5 megabits per second, those in Guernsey have to put up with a maximum of 2Mbps, depending how close they are to an exchange.

That speed is still below the average of 2.3Mbps in Northern Ireland, the region of the UK that fared the worst in a thinkbroadband.com investigation for BBC News that analysed speed tests from the last two months in 6,000 locations. The UK average was 3.2Mbps.

But Russell Sharman, chief technical officer for Cable & Wireless, said the company’s current upgrade of the local broadband network would pave the way for faster internet connections.

‘This is not just about providing everyone in Guernsey with speeds of up to 2Mb. By upgrading the existing infrastructure, we are providing the platform for a whole new generation of broadband services in the future, capable of supporting a range of applications. We are developing the next set of plans and the current upgrade is simply the latest phase.’

What seems to be overlooked is the value for money aspect. Not only are we receiving a poorer service than the UK, we are paying from what I see in adverts considerably more for the service than UK users. I pay around £30.00 per month for unlimited access and I see adverts in the UK for £12.00 per month. Sky broadband will give you a 16mb speed for £10.00 per month.

I am paying almost £80 per month for a so called Business Service – Almost £1000 per year without the line rental – for that I get a service LOWER than the worst UK domestic service – In the evenings it runs up to 8mgs but during the day it is no better than the service (less than 2mg) I would get better by having kept to my domestic line. Poor service, very expensive and a total disgrace. Come on C&W, stop penalising small businesses with shocking service and sky high prices for a worse service than anywhere else in the UK
