GFA inches towards a deal – at a cost

Wednesday 4th June 2008, 2:30PM BST.

0544669.jpgPEACE appears to be breaking out among the GFA and senior clubs after a fractious meeting – but it has come at a cost. Chairman Dave Nussbaumer (pictured) has quit the post, citing a lack of confidence in his role from a number of GFA clubs.

Early in Monday’s get-together of the GFA board and club delegates, Garry Cortez, GFA fixtures secretary, walked out in protest. Within the hour, his chairman had followed him.

It is understood Cortez can be persuaded to come back if, as seems likely now, the majority of the senior GFA clubs agree to a compromise deal. That was an unlikely scenario as recently as the weekend when there was growing talk of a plot to get rid of the board.

Delegates remained tight-lipped, but the GFA released a statement through James Blower, its commercial and sponsorship director: ‘We did come to a compromise agreement and some clubs were happy to support that there and then,’ he said.

David Nussbaumer’s resignation doesn’t come as a surprise. If you look at his past, in both sport and politics, he has resigned a number of positions simply because of a disagreement in opinions and decisions haven’t gone his way. This is supposed to be called democracy.
