Online gaming ‘damages’ reputation

VIRGIN GAMES’ plan to move its head office from London to Guernsey has come under fire from a St Peter Port politician. Deputy Barry Brehaut (pictured) is worried that online gaming will damage the island’s reputation.
‘I think it goes so far as being detrimental to our relationship with the UK, which is already delicate,’ he said. ‘Guernsey is well known for its very high reputation in financial services and I’m not convinced that sits well with e-gambling. Does Guernsey really want to be at its epicentre?’
He does not believe the States has decided whether or not it wants to embrace online gaming. ‘There are huge issues, reputation issues, with e-gambling and I think we lose the moral authority by accepting online gaming in the island without a proper debate.’

I completely agree with Deputy Barry Brehaut’s sentiments towards on-line gambling. Accepting this type of business cannot do our reputation with the UK, with the European Union, or with the United States any good.
Gambling is OK as entertainment for the wealthy who can afford it but regrettably there are many people who cannot control their addiction to it and it leads to mounting debts and broken homes for far too many people. Gambling is a cash cow for a few who profit excessively at the expense of others. Guernsey as a society cannot hold its head up high if it becomes a centre for on-line gambling.

Surely it depends how reputable we make it?
Strict controls would limit ‘bad’ companies setting up here but still allow Guernsey to benefit.
So what is Barry saying of Alderney’s reputation then, bearing in mind it is part of the Bailiwick and an e-gaming/gambling centre?
