Schools one-way scheme unveiled

Wednesday 4th June 2008, 2:29PM BST.

baubigny-one-way.jpgDETAILS of a one-way system around St Sampson’s High and Le Murier schools were today released by the Environment Department.

And it warned that if traffic levels become unacceptable, no-entry signs could go up on other roads, too. Having consulted Education and the emergency services, Environment has decided that the following will be one-way:

  • Baubigny, from the junction of Duveaux Road/Rue de Bas to the junction of Baubigny Road/Le Bordage (northbound only).
  • Le Bordage, from Baubigny to Les Effards (westbound)
  • Les Effards (from its junction with Le Bordage to the junction of Les Hougues Magues Road/La Route des Capelles (westbound)
  • Oatlands Lane (from Les Gigands to Les Sauvagees (east-bound)
  • Epinelle Road (from Les Sauvagees to Baubigny (westbound)

The new schools’ road will remain two-way. ‘The one-way system has been designed to maximise safety for vulnerable roadsusers while minimising disruption to residents and businesses in the area,’ said Environment minister Peter Sirett.

So how is the riding school meant to safely take horses to/ from the fields and ride on the roads?
or did the states not think of this.

The new system is going to push Town bound traffic
from Lislet through Oatlands Lane and Sauvagees
Road to exit at Military Road. This junction is
completely unable to cope with this exiting traffic, watch it at the moment, and some solution
has to be found before there is a tragedy.
Traffic lights have been talked of, to my knowledge, for thirty years. They are essential,
    as of right now.

As traffic leaving the school will only have the choice of either heading towards Oatlands or West along the Effards towards Capelles, don’t you think the traffic will become “Gridlocked” at these times (The area around Capelles School)?
Two busy schools so close together is sure to cause problems, both in the morning and late afternoon.

Glad I live in the Castel.

Seriously though, this is a last ditch (ie flawed) attempt at fixing a problem that should have been considered at the masterplanning stage.

They said that they had advised the residents in the early stages of the planned road changes. What about about all those people who have since bought a house in the area, they didn’t know any thing about the proposed changes.

Also Les Sauvagees cannot cope with the current traffic, with a bus trying to get into the road is bad enoughwith a small amount of traffic let along more.

How ridiculous, the town bound traffic currently gets backed right up to Grow limited during Capelles school rush hour, it can take up to twenty five minutes to crawl into town only to find that no ten hour spaces are left! – How do they think that pushing even more traffic passed Cappelles school could possibly work?? IT WILL BE COMPLETELY GRIDLOCKED!!

I doubt that any version of a one way would assist. As most people who use baubigny and military road already know, the current situation driving into town in the morning is already terrible, on average between 8&9am it takes 15minutes to get from the Fontaine to the halfway. I doubt that the one way will cause that many more issues, people will either choose Capelles way to work or military road. I can’t imagine any other way of dealing with it. I’ve heard people say that the school would have been far better on the land closer to the traffic lights at the Fontaine, but that would have been far worse in my opinion.

It would be ideal if cycle paths were put in place, smaller buses picking up children on numerous routes would be far better, I can see people driving along military road and making their children get out the car and cross over and walk the rest of the way to school. Maybe consideration should have been given to drop off / turning points for children in safe places close to the school where they could walk the rest of the way in safety.
