Catering students ‘used and abused’

0588449.jpgSOME young apprentices are being exploited by the island’s catering industry, it was claimed last night.

Steve Bacon (pictured), head of catering and programme manager for the apprentice scheme at the College of Further Education, said some students on day release were being used as cheap labour.

‘We don’t want to cause trouble, but they have to be held accountable, it’s the only way. Some of these kids aren’t being looked after properly,’ said Mr Bacon.

He and his team made a presentation yesterday about NVQs, the qualification all the students were working towards, and outlined new guidelines drawn up to crack down on the unfair treatment happening within the industry. There are currently 19 day release apprentices, but 28 local establishments are signed up.

They were invited along with more than 250 other representatives from the catering industry. Only eight people were there.

I totally agree! A couple of years ago when my daughter was doing her NVQ in catering, she was subjected to verbal and severe physical abuse by her employer who at that time happened to be one of the most prestigious hotels on the Island. When she tried to stand up for herself and tell the management what was going on they merely dismissed it as “one of those things that happen”! If she hadn’t had been such a strong character goodness knows where this may have lead!
