Freesat launches locally – 200 channels to come

satellitedish.jpgA NEW era for television has arrived in Guernsey with the launch of the Freesat digital service.

Phil Rigg, chairman of Aerials and Antennae Digital Systems Ltd, said the joint BBC and ITV venture was the first opportunity for islanders to receive free digital TV.

It is offered to UK licence holders through a Freeview box, but that service is not available in Guernsey because it interferes with French signals.

However, the BBC and ITV last month launched Freesat, a non-contract, no-subscription digital service with 80 channels. ‘In areas like Guernsey, the only choice previously for getting digital TV was to pay Sky. Now you don’t have to,’ he said. ‘People can now get digital TV without a subscription. You have to pay for the equipment, which costs between £150 and £180, but that’s all.’

You also should have added that Freesat also allows you to view BBC and ITV in High Definition

    Dear Sirs

I used to live in the UK and still have my Freeview box with me. Can I use that or do I have to subscribe locally?

    Thank you.

    In reply to Mr Cheong,

Depending on where in Guernsey you are living, you will be able to pick up French digital terrestrial on your Freeview box, but you won’t be able to use it in Guernsey to pick up the UK freeview signal here, sorry.

Having said that, I live in St Sampson with my aerial pointing towards France and when the weather is good I can pick up UK freeview from the Isle Of Wight and on VERY good days I can receive digital terrestrial from Belgium, Holland and Germany too.

Your best option,(in fact, only option), for free digital TV in Guernsey is currently Freesat….and with the HD options too, it’s much better than the UK Freeview service.
