‘Teach now and reap benefits’

CHILDREN as young as nine are being educated about the dangers of drinking.
Drug and Alcohol Strategy commissioning officer Andrea Nightingale said teaching children as young as Year 5 would allow them to make better-informed decisions later.
The group plans to introduce a primary school alcohol worker for Years 5 and 6. The move comes on the back of a UK survey which showed that almost a third of children said it was normal for an adult to have five or more glasses of wine in one night.
More than a quarter of those asked also said an average night out for an adult would consist of four pints or six bottles of beer.
‘I’m extremely shocked that young people think this is an acceptable amount to be drinking,’ said Mrs Nightingale.
