Wendy Le Tissier (pictured) is hoping to raise about £4,000 for Sandy Gall’s Afghanistan Appeal, which was set up by the ITV presenter more than 20 years ago. Mrs Le Tissier said the threat of altitude sickness as she reaches 6,000ft, as well as the instability of the country, will not stop her accomplishing her goal.

‘I would regret it if I didn’t go. Just think what it will do towards improving the lives of the children in Afghanistan – without our help, they have nothing,’ she said.

Mrs Le Tissier said she knows what to expect because she did the walk in 2004. ‘It will be a challenge and an adventure.’ She added that she was not too worried about the pace of the walk but her main concern was altitude sickness.
