‘Energy commission needs a central plan’

GUERNSEY’S energy commission must not lose focus on the bigger picture if it gets the go-ahead, according to the Chamber of Commerce.
An energy-policy White Paper that proposes the formation of such a commission is currently being considered by States members.
It is one of the methods that has been devised to reduce Guernsey’s carbon emissions by 80% on 1990 levels by 2050.
Chamber of Commerce president Paul Luxon (pictured) said he applauded the new House’s proposal to create a commission, but warned that it must not lose itself in the details.
‘Chamber can play a part through its membership of 600 people who represent 10,000 employees in Guernsey, but this can happen only when the commission has worked out its strategy. At the moment, there are lots of little initiatives but what we need is a central plan. The longest journey starts with the first step. What we need to do is to get all of us taking those first steps together.
‘Even then it will take years before we are making a real impact. This isn’t going to be solved overnight.’
