‘Fuel price rise will benefit us’

SOARING fuel prices won’t have an adverse effect on the island’s tourism, according to some local hoteliers.
The issue has become a worldwide problem with airlines and shipping companies being forced to raise their prices. That has lead to more expensive holidays and also to more expensive imports.
But the view of two of Guernsey’s leading hoteliers is that the price rises will actually be of benefit to the local trade. Mark Galins, (pictured) who co-owns the Bon Port Hotel, says that Guernsey is now a comparatively cheaper place to visit than long-haul destinations.
‘All air-ticket prices are increasing, but it won’t hit us as hard as many of the more expensive long-haul flights. Hopefully, it will encourage people to visit Guernsey on shorter weekend visits,’ he said. Ian Walker, owner of Bella Luce and Fleur du Jardin hotels, agreed with Mr Galins’s assessment about the fuel prices, but disagrees that the credit crunch will become a serious issue.
