ISLAND captain Matt Warren has left Sylvans for St Martin’s.
Last week he had given the westerners an ultimatum that if they did not sign any players during the June transfer window, then he would leave.
But the 27-year-old put pen to paper late on Tuesday night and will now play in the black-and-white strip of Saints.
‘I’ve been at Sylvans since the age of four and I needed a new challenge,’ said Warren.
‘Unfortunately, football in Guernsey is stagnant and it was either a case of knocking football on the head as I wasn’t enjoying it or going elsewhere.
‘It was a chore to go to training after work and I didn’t like that. I worked with Big Fal [Colin Fallaize] in the 2003 Island Games and that was very successful for us.
‘[St Martin’s] have got a nice pitch, a nice set up at the club and a great bunch of lads. I’m just looking forward to it.’
St Martin’s boss Fallaize is extremely pleased with the development.
‘I’m delighted because I think I can help Matt with his challenge,’ he said.
‘I don’t think we’ve seen the Matt that I worked with at the island level for a long time. I think I can help get that Matt back.
‘I’m not saying he’s been a bad player, but it looks like he’s lost his zest for the game.’
Rumours had been circulating for the last couple of weeks that Warren would be moving.
The club favourite to obtain his services was Rangers.
The midfielder had come very close to joining them a few seasons ago but after a delay due to an administration error with his transfer and registration forms, Warren changed his mind and stayed with the westerners.
It is a time of upheaval at Sylvans with their Priaulx coach, Martyn de Garis, stepping down.
Joining him through the exit door is his younger brother, Paul.
In a slightly surprising move, the former island goalkeeper has joined Priaulx champions Bels.
It looks as if an exodus from St Peter’s could be triggered off, with Michael Wilson and Sam Matthews rumoured to be rejoining their former club, North, and promising young central defender Naro Zimmerman going to Saints.
