Red Lion pollution is localised

Vic Froom at Belle Greve Bay. Sewage is being pumped out very close to the beach.
PUBLIC Services has claimed that pollution caused by the use of the Red Lion outfall is only localised.
The beach near the outfall has been polluted and signs are in place warning people of the risks.
But the department claims that the danger does not stretch much further.
‘Water samples have shown that sewage pollution from the Red Lion outfall is not being carried far beyond the vicinity of the pipe.
‘Samples taken in the QEII Marina this week met the EU standards for bathing water quality despite discharge from the outfall flowing in that direction.
‘Although the Red Lion outfall extends beyond the normal low water mark, there are air vents through which sewage can be discharged closer to the shore.
‘There have been no reported incidents of this happening except when the pipe was submerged, which would not have had a significant impact on the dispersal.’
A concerned bay user contacted the Guernsey Press about the vents and called for them to be sealed.
‘I used to ormer down here but I wouldn’t now, not after what I’ve seen today,’ said the man, who wished to remain anonymous.
‘It’s going straight to the marina and past the harbour. It does not give visitors a good impression of Guernsey.’
The shorter outfall is in use while work is carried out on the one which goes further out to sea.
This has not pleased environmentalist Vic Froome. He said the States should have looked at the pipes 50 years ago.
‘There is no disaster recovery system in place if this sewer breaks down,’ he said.
‘We used to have five or six outfalls and now we have one main drain. The problem with Guernsey is we have 65,000-plus people living here and we are pumping all that sewage in one minute area of the island.’
Deputy Public Services minister Scott Ogier said the issue of full sewage treatment was once again on its agenda, but in the meantime it was vital to maintain the current disposal facilities.
